COVID-19 UPDATE 7/25: Secrest is not closed! OUR GROUNDS ARE OPEN to pedestrian traffic during daylight hours. No bicycles, skateboards or rollerblades permitted on walkways. Masks are not required outdoors, where social distancing is maintained; please be respectful of other visitors. Parking is located in the main lot near the intersection of Secrest Rd. and Mill Rd., and in front of the Secrest Welcome Center. Porta johns and hand wash stations have been added for your convenience. We have just received direction NOT to open the slide and children’s area on July 6th, as previously communicated. The Taylor Pavilion, slide and surrounding area will remain closed INDEFINITELY. We continue working hard to keep the gardens beautiful and safe for your enjoyment during an otherwise trying time.
We invite you to enjoy our new Coneflower (Echinacea) Trial Garden featuring over 100 varieties of this popular, summer-flowering perennial. A kaleidoscope of flower colors from white and pink to fiery shades of orange, red and yellow demonstrate the proliferation of Coneflower breeding over the last two decades. Over 300 individual plants grace the north end of the former Rose Garden as part of a 3-year evaluation to determine the best coneflowers for our area. Horticultural traits such as winter survival, growth habit, flower quality, disease resistance and pollinator visitation will be recorded and published as a service to our visitors, students and industry collaborators. Secrest Arboretum has a rich history of plant evaluation and we are pleased to kick off a new era of relevant, practical research! Check back for a list of coneflower varieties, bed map and details on how to vote for your favorites!
For those who can't be here in person, don't miss our crabapple aerial drone footage, shot on May 8, 2023! We hope you enjoy this bird's eye view as much as we do.
Look at, learn about, and love the plant life around you. Over the past 100+ years, we have grown into an expansive 110 acre outdoor laboratory and landscape garden. Theme gardens feature over 2,500 varieties of woody and herbaceous plants, highlighting varied ecosystems and best landscape practices. At Secrest, our beautiful theme gardens illustrate the use of style, color and texture within plant habitats to establish a sustainable landscape.
